Who it's for || What it's about || How you'll learn || What it costs || When it's on

  Who it's for
  • Complete beginners
    or

  • People wishing to extend basic computing skills and gain a qualification

No previous knowledge, skills or experience are required.

What it's about

A very practical 'hands on' course where students learn, and build up confidence, whilst working at the computer.

During the 34 week course students will have the opportunity to explore many aspects of working with a computer and ICT equipment, learning how to:

  • Switch on a computer and load relevant software

  • Use a mouse and keyboard

  • Save and print their work

  • Use e-mail to communicate

  • Browse the Internet

  • Search the Internet for specific information

  • Produce word processed documents

  • Use clipart, draw pictures and manipulate graphic images

  • Combine text and images using Desktop Publishing techniques

  • Understand how a basic spreadsheet and database works

  • Produce graphs from sets of numbers

  • Be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of using computers and Information Communications Technology

The course is accredited by an OCR certificate.

Students will use PCs with Microsoft Windows, Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, Access, Publisher and PowerPoint; as well as graphics and other computing software and equipment.

How you'll learn

Each topic will be introduced by the tutor, sometimes through practical demonstration, by slide shows on the computer or video presentations.

Students will practice at the computer using worksheets or set assignments, with full support of the tutor.

Topics will be discussed in both small and whole class groups.

The tutor will offer ongoing feedback so that the course can be tailored to the needs of the students. There is no 'official' homework but students may be asked to consider topics outside of class time. This is entirely optional.

What it costs

Tuition fees (payable on enrolment):

  • All fee paying students will pay £5 per term (£15 per year).
